Why Reading an SDS Correctly Matters
Every hazardous chemical in your workplace comes with a Safety Data Sheet, and under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), you have a right to access it. But access alone does not protect you. Knowing how to read a Safety Data Sheet quickly and accurately is what keeps you safe during a spill, a splash, or a fire. The good news is that every SDS follows the same globally harmonized 16-section format, so once you learn the structure, you can find critical information in seconds.
Sections 1-4: The Emergency Essentials
Section 1: Identification lists the product name, manufacturer, recommended use, and a 24-hour emergency phone number. If something goes wrong, this is where you find who to call.
Section 2: Hazard Identification is the most important section for daily work. It contains the GHS pictograms, signal word (Danger or Warning), hazard statements, and precautionary statements that summarize the risk in plain language.
Section 3: Composition and Information on Ingredients identifies the chemical ingredients, their CAS numbers, and concentration ranges. Medical personnel rely on this during treatment.
Section 4: First-Aid Measures tells you exactly what to do after inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, or ingestion. Read this before you use the chemical, not after an exposure.
Sections 5-8: Response and Protection
Section 5: Firefighting Measures specifies suitable extinguishing media and hazardous combustion products.
Section 6: Accidental Release Measures covers spill containment and cleanup procedures, including evacuation guidance.
Section 7: Handling and Storage outlines safe handling practices, incompatible materials, and storage temperature requirements.
Section 8: Exposure Controls and Personal Protection lists permissible exposure limits (PELs), threshold limit values (TLVs), engineering controls, and the specific PPE you must wear, including glove material and respirator type.
Sections 9-11: Technical Data
Section 9: Physical and Chemical Properties gives appearance, odor, pH, flash point, vapor density, and boiling point, useful for recognizing a leak or predicting how a vapor will behave.
Section 10: Stability and Reactivity identifies conditions and materials to avoid, such as heat, water, or oxidizers.
Section 11: Toxicological Information describes routes of exposure, acute and chronic health effects, LD50 data, and carcinogenicity classifications.
Sections 12-16: Non-Mandatory and Regulatory Information
OSHA does not enforce Sections 12 through 15 because they fall under other agencies, but they remain valuable. Section 12: Ecological Information covers environmental impact. Section 13: Disposal Considerations explains proper waste handling. Section 14: Transport Information provides UN numbers and shipping classifications. Section 15: Regulatory Information lists applicable safety and environmental regulations. Section 16: Other Information shows the preparation or revision date, which tells you whether the sheet is current.
Putting It Into Practice
Before working with any new chemical, review Sections 2, 4, 7, and 8 at minimum. Verify that the PPE listed is available, confirm storage compatibility, and know your first-aid steps. Employers must keep SDSs accessible during every work shift and train employees on their use.
